About us...

Carfree Bedford was started in the spring of 2005 by Emil Choski. Since then, Mr. Choski has worked with Transportation Alternatives, Community Board #1, community members and business owners. The organization's main activities include helping festival organizers obtain permits to use Bedford Ave, collecting petition signatures, conducting surveys, creating and distributing fliers, and forging relationships with local businesses.

Carfree Bedford is a group of volunteers who believe that it is time for a new paradigm of transportation in New York, one that does not glorify congestion but instead allows for modal diversity. Only one out of 5 New Yorkers own a car yet every single street in New York is entirely devoted to automobiles. It's time to end this grossly unfair distribution of public space.

We believe that congestion can be resolved by allowing for a greater diversity of means of transportation. We support the creation of bike lanes, more bike parking, and more pedestrian promenades for the majority of New Yorkers who don't own a car.

Look for us on the street as we will be conducting surveys throughout the year and look for Carfree Bedford presence during street festivals.
